Explore the Museum Online
The National Museum of Wildlife Art presents four unique ways to explore the permanent collection online. The NMWA is proud to offer Quick Time tours of four of our permanent galleries. These tours offer the virtual visitor a close-up look at both the paintings and sculptures in the Rungius, American Bison, JKM, and Clymer Studio galleries. For example, one can “zoom-in” on Alan Houser’s Lament and “walk” around all sides of the sculpture. For the virtual visitor seeking an interactive experience, the NMWA offers award winning games as well. Art Tales allows the user to be a Frontier Explorer who writes journal entries to accompany images of the West, a Museum Curator who puts together an online exhibition, or a Naturalist who takes field notes about a particular animal species.
A Brush with Wildlife won the Silver Muse Award from the AAM Media and Technology Committee in 2002. This game provides biographical information about master wildlife painter, Carl Rungius, and the opportunity to create a composition of one’s own and submit it for critique.
Experience the narrated journey of an elk calf from birth in Yellowstone National Park to its first winter at the National Elk Refuge in My Life as an Elk, learning about its habitat and predators along the way.
Animal Athletes, developed to coincide with the 2002 Winter Olympics, offers rules and directions for playing seven games inspired by the skill, speed, stealth, or trickery of wild creatures.
Lost Wax, Found Bronze uses high quality video, audio, text, still images, and digital animation. The interactive program demonstrates bronze casting by following acclaimed wildlife sculptor Gerald Balciar as he creates a piece from its first clay model to the application of the final patina. Shot at the Lands End foundry in Paonia, Colorado, the project also highlights the skills of the foundry artisans who bring Balciar’s work to life.
The NMWA currently offers a podcast for the American Bison gallery. Narrated by Curator of Education, Jane Lavino, the podcast is the perfect audio accompaniment to the virtual tour of the gallery.
